BEST BAKED CINNAMON SUGAR DONUTS RECIPE

Whether served with a hot cup of coffee for breakfast or on their own as an afternoon snack, these ultra-soft and fluffy baked donuts are always a fantastic choice. And yet the recipe is so easy to prepare right in your kitchen. These Homemade Old Fashioned Cake Donuts are baked, not fried.

 Flours that work include white or spelled flour, oat flour, or gluten-free all-purpose flour. Others such as whole wheat flour, almond flour, or coconut flour may work with some adjustments. If you want to use sugar, increase the amount to half a cup and increase the water to two-thirds of a cup.

INGREDIENTS TO MAKE THE BEST BAKED CINNAMON SUGAR DONUT RECIPE

To make your own cinnamon sugar, simply mix two tablespoons of ground cinnamon into half a cup of sugar. You can use regular white sugar, unrefined coconut sugar, date sugar, evaporated cane juice, or sugar-free granulated erythritol.

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 extra large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 1/4 cups whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. and grease 2 donut pans.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, eggs, vanilla extract, brown sugar, 4 tablespoons melted butter, and granulated sugar. Mix until well combined.
  • Add the flour mixture to the egg mixture and mix until well combined but do not over mix.
  • Bake for 10 minutes.
  • While the donuts are baking, melt 1/2 cup butter and mix 1/2 cup sugar with 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon.
  • When the donuts come out of the oven, let them cool for about 1-2 minutes. Then dip the donuts in melted butter, roll them on both sides and roll them in cinnamon sugar. Enjoy the heat.
  • If you don’t like sweets, just coat one side of the donut in cinnamon sugar.
  • Make sure you coat the donuts while they are still warm.
  • If you don’t have a bag, use a plastic zip-lock bag and cut off the tip.
  • Leave the baked donuts with cinnamon sugar to cool completely.
  • Cover the container, leaving a small opening to allow excess moisture to escape, preventing soggy donuts the next day.

HOW TO MAKE THE BEST BAKED CINNAMON SUGAR DONUT RECIPE

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the water or apple juice, white or apple cider vinegar, vanilla, oil or nut butter (or applesauce or banana), and sweetener.
  • Do not stir.
  • Place the donut pan on the center rack of the oven. Bake for eight minutes, or until baked cinnamon sugar donuts have risen and a toothpick inserted into the center of a cinnamon donut comes out mostly clean.
  • Allow to cool before removing from pan and dipping in cinnamon sugar. If you don’t have a donut pan or prefer to make mini donuts, the first option is to bake the donuts in a mini muffin pan. For smaller munchkins, only fill the pan halfway.
  • Combine sugar, butter, nutmeg, and salt in medium bowl; beat with an electric mixer until well combined. Add the egg and mix until incorporated.
  • Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture in batches, alternating with the milk, beating the dough briefly after each addition. Bake the donuts in the preheated oven until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean, 7 to 9 minutes.
  • While the donuts are baking, place the melted butter in a shallow bowl for the frosting. Combine 2/3 cup sugar and cinnamon in another shallow bowl. Roll the warm donuts in melted butter and then in cinnamon sugar for coating.
