Old Fashioned Lemon Squares Recipe

These Old Fashioned Lemon Squares are easy to make and absolutely delicious. With a flaky crust and a tangy lemon glaze, they’re just like your grandma would make. This Old Fashioned Lemon Squares recipe is special. It is a recipe that has been around for many years, very likely more than 70 years. As far as we know, it comes from my great-grandmother C. It’s quite possible that it goes back further, but we don’t know for sure.

  • Bark
  • all-purpose flour
  • crystal Sugar
  • butter
  • vanilla extract
  • lemon juice
  • baking powder
  • Ingredients for lemon pudding
  • egg
  • crystal Sugar
  • lemon peel
  • confectioners’ sugar for icing

  • Butter you can’t have a smooth, buttery crust without real butter.
  • Sugar use natural cane sugar in all baking, you can certainly use white sugar.
  • The flour uses organic all-purpose flour; you can of course use regular all-purpose flour.
  • Eggs all of baking uses large eggs to add creaminess to the lemon filling in the center.
  • Lemons you will need lemons for both the peel and the juice! Love lemons always add more zest as they add a lovely natural acidity and citrus kapow.
  • Powdered Sugar shows you how to turn simple powdered sugar, lemon juice and zest into an incredible lemon frosting.
  • Add crust mixture to prepared pan
  • Remove from the oven and place on a cooling rack / or a towel. The crust does not need to chill longer than it takes to make the lemon cream.
  • Add the lemon pudding ingredients to a bowl.
  • Bake for 25 minutes
  • Transfer to refrigerator for 2 hours or until cold.
  • Cut into 20 sticks.

  • Start by preparing the crust. This is a short crust, so there are only three ingredients, four if you count the tiny pinch of salt.
  • Add the ingredients to a food processor and pulse until they resemble fine crumbs.
  • Press the crust into an ungreased 9×9 pan. It will be very dry and crumbly, but lovely and flaky. Place in the oven and bake for 20 minutes until set.
  • After baking, remove the crust from the oven to fill it with the lemon filling.
  • Simply whisk together all the ingredients for the filling and pour over the crust. The recipe calls for the juice and zest of one large lemon. For me it was about four tablespoons of juice, which you can use more or less to taste.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes until top is set.
  • Remove from the oven, let cool completely, and then remove from the tin, cut into squares and dust with icing sugar.
  • Not only is this one of the best recipes for Old Fashioned Lemon Squares; with fresh ingredients, a gooey, tangy and sweet centre, a soft buttery crust and an amazing lemon glaze on top, but it’s also the easiest recipe ever.
  • This is a multi-part recipe that is not difficult at all, but you have to prepare these delicious lemon bars step by step.
